Forgiveness

Forgiveness can be thought of as a conscious decision to relieve feelings of resentment or hurt towards a person or group of people who you believe have harmed you. Forgiveness is a means of making peace that appears to have profound psychological benefits.

Forgiveness is the act of releasing resentment, anger, or hurt you feel towards others. It involves relinquishing the need to seek revenge or punishment. Forgiveness does not mean that you forget or excuse the poor behaviour of others, but rather that you choose to release the negative emotions that you may have been holding onto.

The benefits of forgiveness:

  1. Reduced stress and anxiety. Holding onto anger and resentment may be stressful and anxiety producing. When you forgive someone, you release the negative emotions that you have been holding onto, which can lead to a decrease in stress and anxiety. Studies have shown that forgiveness can reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, and even PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder).

  2. Improved psychological wellbeing. Holding onto resentment can be detrimental your psychological wellbeing. Feelings of resentment have been associated with chronic stress, anxiety, and depression. Holding onto resentment can also negatively impact your relationships with others and lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness.

  3. Improved relationships. When you forgive someone, you are more likely to have empathy and understanding towards them, which can help to build stronger relationships.

  4. Increased happiness. Forgiveness has been linked to increased happiness and life satisfaction. Letting go of negative emotions towards others can help you experience more positive emotions. This can lead to a greater sense of happiness and overall wellbeing.

  5. Improved physical health. Research has shown that forgiveness is associated with a lower risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure, and improved immune system function.
